Tidewater African Cultural Alliance

Rita Addico Cohen’s family moved to Hampton Roads in 1982 from Ghana when she was eight. Now, about forty years later, Cohen still remembers the culture shock.

Cohen's childhood experience inspired her to found the nonprofit Tidewater African Cultural Alliance (TACA). The group's goal is to instill knowledge and an appreciation of Africa’s diverse countries. TACA sponsors cultural events for all ages that highlight music, dance, and food from specific African countries.

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation wants your organization to succeed whether you focus on arts, education, environment, healthcare, human services or many other areas that help make Hampton Roads great.

As a community foundation underpinned by our region's charitable people, we can help in four keyways:

  1. Receive advice and assistance. Talk with our program staff during monthly nonprofit Call-in days, attend our free virtual training sessions to learn about grants and read our online Grant Seekers Gazette to learn of opportunities. Sign up for the newsletter here.
  2. Apply for grants. Our Nonprofit section of this website includes details on applying for grants. Planning Grants are available for nonprofits to explore collaborating in specific focus areas to solve an issue. Next grant deadline: March 13th for Visionaries for Change.
  3. Learn or hone the skills you need. In addition to free 90-minute virtual training session, we sponsor the Academy for Nonprofit Excellence at Tidewater Community College. Its reasonably priced, one- and two-day training sessions are geared towards nonprofits. Staff and board members from 450-plus nonprofits have participated since we helped found the academy in 2005. More than 120 people have earned a Certificate in Nonprofit Management. And we bring together nonprofits working in specific fields for Conversation Groups related to their work as well as offer DEI training for nonprofit Affinity staff members.
  4. Maximize your agency's endowment. There are benefits to having your organization's endowment managed by our community foundation. We already manage assets for more than 55 area nonprofits who benefit from being part of a large, professionally managed pool. Each year participating nonprofits can take a distribution to use as they want.
