Thanks to Virginia Wesleyan University freshman Sarah Stermer, there are 1,225 new native trees growing at Virginia Beach schools this year and 1,850 saplings taking root in Haiti where deforestation is rampant. And, she is just beginning her work to improve the environment by planting trees. Sarah is among 413 students attending college this year with help from Hampton University Community Foundation scholarships. Like Sarah, all of the scholarship recipients are finding their ways to make our world better.

Taxpayers ages 70 1/2 and up can directly donate up to $100,000 a year in Individual Retirement Account assets to their favorite charities without it counting as taxable income. And, the donations can help meet annual minimum IRA distributions.

Residents of Hampton Roads are all too familiar with sea-level rise and the flooding that disrupts our region. On Saturday, October 27, hundreds of our region’s residents will become citizen-scientists for the second consecutive year, armed with smartphones to document high water during the year’s highest tide – dubbed “the king tide” – and help researches better forecast tidal flooding.
