Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop

When Tom Brandl started Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop, he needed to learn how to start and run an effective nonprofit. The Academy for Nonprofit Excellence gave him the skills he needed to bring his workshops to middle school and high school students.

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation wants your organization to succeed whether you focus on arts, education, environment, healthcare, human services or other areas that help make Hampton Roads great.

As a community foundation underpinned by our region's charitable people, we can help in four key ways:

  1. Receive advice and assistance. Come meet one-on-one with our program staff during monthly nonprofit drop-in days, attend our free training sessions to learn about grants and read our online Grant Seekers Gazette to learn of opportunities. Click here to read a few recent Gazettes and some of our other specialized enewsletters.
  2. Apply for grants. Thanks to our donors, in 2015 we granted more than $4.7 million in competitive Community Grants (in addition to more than $14.7 million in donor-specified grants and scholarships). Our Nonprofit section of this website includes details on applying for grants, deadlines and submitting progress reports. New in  2017 are Planning Grants for nonprofits to explore collaborating in specific focus areas to solve an issue. Coming up: July 1 for Health and Wellness and Economic Stability  grants.
  3. Learn or hone the skills you need. We applaud your desire to keep learning. Most months we offer free 90-minute training sessions in our office related to grants. In addition, we sponsor the Academy for Nonprofit Excellence at Tidewater Community College. Its reasonably priced, one- and two-day training sessions are geared towards nonprofits. Staff and board members from 450-plus nonprofits have learned about fundraising, branding, staff management and dozens more topics since we helped found the academy in 2005. More than 100 people have earned a Certificate in Nonprofit Management. At the community foundation we also have a group of nonprofits receiving fundraising training through our Building Excellence grant program. And, we bring together nonprofits working in specific fields for Conversation Groups related to their work.
  4. Maximize your agency's endowment. There are benefits to having your organization's endowment managed by our community foundation. We already manage assets for more than 45 area nonprofits who benefit from being part of a large, professionally managed pool. Each year participating nonprofits can take a distribution to use as they want.
