Thanks to Virginia Wesleyan University freshman Sarah Stermer, there are 1,225 new native trees growing at Virginia Beach schools this year and 1,850 saplings taking root in Haiti where deforestation is rampant. And, she is just beginning her work to improve the environment by planting trees. Sarah is among 413 students attending college this year with help from Hampton University Community Foundation scholarships. Like Sarah, all of the scholarship recipients are finding their ways to make our world better.

Robert Abbott, M.D., vividly recalls “burning out mentally” after his first semester in medical school. To heal himself, the Yorktown resident hit the pause button for a year. We remember accountant Melvin R. Green, a good friend of our professional advisor community, who recently passed away at age 96. In 2014, he endowed a scholarship fund at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to help students earn a four-year degree in business.

As 2001 valedictorian at Norfolk’s Booker T. Washington High School, Cherise Williams Newsome dreamed of attending Georgetown University. However, paying for the private university was a challenge. She overcame Georgetown’s private tuition thanks to scholarships, including the Jesse T. Bonney Scholarship from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Today, Cherise is an advocate for public education and says it “the great equalizer and pathway to a better life.”

When Shirley Liverman’s husband passed away in February 2017, the Suffolk resident knew she had to find a way to honor his legacy. She recently established the Dr. Milton R. Liverman Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to honor his love of children and education. The scholarship will help graduating seniors from Suffolk Public Schools pay for college.

Imagine sending three children to college at the same time. That's the reality the Dyer family of Virginia Beach faced two years ago as triplets Sam, Luke and Abby graduated from high school. All three received renewable scholarships from the Perry and Bunny Morgan Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

In 2017 The Maury Foundation donated $500,000 to the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to establish two permanent Maury Foundation Scholarship funds. The scholarships will be awarded to new Maury graduates starting in 2018. For the first time, recipients will renew scholarships for up to four years of college study.
